NTUC offers union members legal support in personal matters through panel of law firms

NTUC launched on 15 March 2024 an exclusive initiative for NTUC union members to address their evolving needs.

Through a panel of law firms, the Legal Assistance Panel (LAP) will offer members expanded legal services on personal matters at up to 20 per cent off.

The panel will specialise in the four key areas:

• Complex employment matters
• Wills, estates, and probate matters
• Matrimonial and criminal matters
• General corporate and commercial matters

The firms span small, medium, and large practices, including one that provides Syariah legal services.

LAP also supplements the current dispute resolution assistance on employment matters by unions and TADM@NTUC.

Before the launch of LAP, members with other employment or non-employment matters may be referred to LawWorks Legal Clinics.

LawWorks Legal Clinics is a collaboration between NTUC and Pro Bono SG. Through a one-off complimentary session with a volunteer lawyer, members can receive basic legal advice.

NTUC Assistant Secretary-General and Legal Services Covering Director Patrick Tay emphasised the significance of LAP in meeting the evolving needs of NTUC members.

Mr Tay said: “LAP underscores NTUC’s unwavering commitment to support members in different facets of their lives, extending beyond employment concerns to crucial personal legal matters.

“With LAP, we will provide a wider range of legal services, accessible legal representation, and assist the vulnerable in times of need.”

Responding to members’ needs

Insights gathered from an NTUC survey conducted in 2022 among 568 members and non-members revealed a strong demand for expanded legal support.

Some 55 per cent of respondents expressed the need for assistance in complex employment-related matters, while 34 per cent sought services relating to wills, estates, and probate.

Additionally, 75 per cent of respondents indicated their interest in accessing a panel of law firms as part of their NTUC membership.

NTUC members can apply for LAP via the MyNTUC App, NTUC Uportal, NTUC’s affiliated unions and associations or NTUC Membership Services.

Eligible members will receive a confirmation letter, which they may use to consult and engage a law firm from the panel.
